Eggplant, also known as aubergine, is a popular fruit (not a vegetable) that comes in many different types: bulbous, glossy, deep purple (used in Mediterranean cuisine), plump and small, ivory or the tubular (Asian ones). Eggplant is slightly acidic, contains low level of sugar and fiber, a small amount of various vitamins and some phosphorus. Your rabbit will be perfectly fine if he or she receives a small portion of eggplant twice or even three times per week.
The rabbit’s daily diet should not contain any tubers, bulbs and seeds – this includes garlic, onion, lentil, peas, potato and similar vegetables. The experts say that these types of vegetables contain a high level of starch in general and might be toxic, so they should be avoided. Garlic can have an immunosuppressive effect in rabbits and may even cause an anaphylactic reaction.
Grapes should be given to rabbit as treats – four or five grape beans per week will be ok. Each bean has to be washed very carefully, without soap or detergent and kept wet when given to the bunny. This can add more water to the daily intake of your pet. The rabbit has a unique digestive system that requires a diet low in protein and high in fiber. A healthy rabbit diet should contain hay, fresh vegetables, grass, pellets and a lot of water. So grass is one of the main components of rabbit’s daily diet and the most natural food a rabbit can eat. Hostas (Hosta plant)
Hostas are a spring treat that wild bunnies and pet bunnies love to eat. However, it is not a plant that should be given daily to your bunny because it does not contain many important nutrients your rabbit needs.
Iceberg lettuce is one of the vegetables that has very little nutrients and giving it to your rabbit can cause him or her to experience digestive problems and diarrhea. Iceberg lettuce contains a chemical called lactucarium which is harmful to a rabbit’s health if ingested.
Jicama is a Mexican vegetable also called Mexican turnip or Mexican yam bean. It is toxic to bunnies so they should not receive it. It is used in some popular recipes but it can only be consumed by humans and not by rabbits.
Kale belongs to the cruciferous family, along with collard greens, broccoli, arugula and brussels sprout. It contains a high amount of vitamins A, C and K. Vitamin A is very important to rabbits because it improves vision, supports skin health and can prevent future eye problems. Vitamin C improves health, helps the immune system to stay strong and maintains the correct level of hydration. Kale also has other nutrients important for your rabbit’s health – magnesium, calcium, iron and natural antioxidants. Kale should only be used as a treat or reward for your rabbit, and it shouldn’t be given on a daily basis. Otherwise, it can cause gas, diarrhea and bloating. Only adult rabbits can eat kale.
Kiwi is a fruit that can be given to your rabbit, but this kind of food should not represent more than 10 percent of his or her diet. You should peel off the skin of the fruit to be sure you do not give your little friend any chemicals. Kiwi has seeds, but they are small and the bunny will not notice them. When introducing any new food in the daily diet of your bunny, be sure to do it gradually.
Rabbits can eat lavender plants. This herb can help stressed bunnies, but be sure to introduce it carefully and slowly into their diet. Watch if there is any strange reaction that your rabbit might have and if there are no problems, you can include lavender plants into the daily diet.
Lemon balm is safe for rabbits. It is, in fact, recommended for: viral and bacterial problems, diarrhea, gas and bloating, stress and axiety. Once your rabbit starts eating lemon balm, you have to see if he or she likes it and if there are any problems within the first 48 hours. After you are sure that everything is OK, you can offer your furry friend lemon balm on a daily basis.
The rabbit’s diet should not be based on lettuce. Some types of lettuces, like the iceberg lettuce, can be harmful to the bunnies because they contains lactucarium. Lettuces that are light-colored have a high level of water and almost no nutritional value and should be avoided. The romaine lettuce is one of the darker types of lettuces, more fibrous and leafy. This type can be fed to a rabbit because it has a higher amount of fiber and nutrients. However, it is not recommended to be offered in large quantities because it can cause digestive problems.
Mandarin should be given to rabbits only in small quantities. It contains small amounts of calcium and phosphorus, along with a high level of sugar. The mandarin peel is also fine for your pet. You can offer him or her a few segments per week.
Rabbits love mango because it is a sweet and juicy fruit. However high level of sugar in fruits is not good for the delicate digestive system of the bunny and too much sugar can lead to diarrhea and other nasty health problems. This is why mango should be offered once or twice per week in small quantities. It should not be considered as the primary food for your pet because it also has a high acidic content.
Mango skin should be fine for your rabbit to nibble on. It should be fed fresh, but never dried. Your rabbit should not receive any nuts, no matter the type. The high level of fats contained in nuts is too much for the digestive system of bunnies – nuts can produce severe health problems for your pet. There are lots of other treats that you can safely offer to your bunny.
Oatmeal can supplement the main diet of a rabbit. He or she consume it to receive the most needed daily nutrients. Oatmeal can be found in supermarkets or grocery stores in many different forms: crushed, rolled or steel-cut. Do not cook it before serving it to your bunny – it needs to be fresh.
Whole oats are great for rabbits – they contain beta-glucans (for boosting the immune system), minerals and vitamins. Unprocessed oats offer fresh nutrients for your short-tailed friend. Oats can be a good source of fats and proteins used for strong nails, teeth and hair. Oats can help rabbits heal from digestive problems, eczema, diarrhea, neuralgia, bladder and kidney problems. You should give oats only to adult bunnies, young bunnies can choke with them.
Onions are toxic to rabbits and can create blood abnormalities. Because of this rabbits should not receive onions as food. Onions contain high level of starch and are known to have an immunosuppressive effect. They should clearly be avoided.

However, oranges also have high levels of acid and sugar and this is the reason why they should not be offered daily to your bunny.
Oregano is a safe choice to give to your rabbit. You should remember that daily diet of your bunny should contain mostly hay, grass and vegetables and just a small addition of herbs. Oregano can supplement the daily diet, but you should never give your rabbit the same herbs every day.
Parsley can be safely fed to your bunny, but not as a basic food. Rabbits need to get mostly grass and vegetables with just a small addition of herbs. Peanut butter, along with peanuts and other types of nuts, should be clearly avoided from your rabbit’s diet if you want him or her to be healthy. It should not be considered a treat for bunnies. Peanut butter can lead to serious digestive problems because it contains a high level of fat that cannot be digested by a rabbit. Fresh pineapple is better than the frozen one because that enzyme is still active and can help your rabbit to overcome diarrhea and reduce the secretion of intestinal fluid. Bromelain can also help with hairballs and is very good to give to your rabbit during a molt. As a fruit, pineapple should be offered in small amounts, because of the high sugar content.
Plums should not be given to rabbits in large quantities because of high sugar content that can harm their digestive system. But if you remember to offer plums in a moderation, as a treat, once or twice per week, your rabbit should be perfectly safe. Fruits also contain nutrients and vitamins that are beneficial for your bunny.
Popcorn contains iron, fiber, vitamin B6 and magnesium, but it is only good for humans. Even if you’ve heard from other people that they’ve offered their rabbits one or two pieces of popcorn, rabbits should not eat popcorn. It can cause bloating that could even lead to his or her death! It could happen rabbits can’t eliminate the gas in a normal way. Popcorn can also contribute to weight gain, which is definitely not healthy for a rabbit.
Potato skin isn’t good for rabbits. Like the potato itself, the skin contains substances that can be toxic to your rabbit. Raspberries, along with raspberry leaves and canes, can safely be givens to rabbits. They can be treated as a healthy snack for bunnies. However, be careful not to offer your rabbit frozen or dried raspberries. Rabbits can’t digest frozen foods and the dried raspberries contain a lot of sugar. Offering your pet a raspberry from time to time will keep him or her perfectly safe and happy.
Rocket is very good for rabbits. It’s a bitter type of salad leaves, but the bunnies don’t mind the bitterness. They really enjoy it and it contains many nutrients he or she needs. If you want to give it to your bunny on a daily basis, first try to see if he or she will like it and eat. If everything is OK in the first 24 hours after giving your rabbit rocket you can include it in the daily meals.
Lettuces should be avoided in general and should not be given to rabbits. However, there is a type of lettuce that is safe – a darker, more fibrous and leafy one called romaine lettuce. You can give spinach to your rabbit but only from time to time. It contains a high level of oxalic acid and it should be offered in a rotation with other leafy greens. It also has high level of iron so it definitely should not be given daily. People usually assume that rabbits should get their vitamin A from greens, but as hay contains a lot of vitamin A, this is not necessary.
Squash, along with sunflower seeds and pumpkin seeds, is safe to be given to rabbits, but only in limited quantities. It should be considered as a treat and nothing more. Rabbits can’t digest seeds and this is why they should get only a really small quantity of squash. You must be very careful about the seeds you give to your rabbit because many of them can choke your little friend.
Straw has a limited nutritional content and is not as good as hay. Usually, straw is mostly used for bedding and not for feeding. Giving straw to a rabbit is like giving cardboard to a child. Strawberries also have seeds and as you know, bunnies should not eat some types of seeds, but these are fine for them.
Sunflower seeds can be given to rabbits in small quantities. Despite the fact that they contain a lot of fatty acids that can cause severe liver and arterial problems, if they are given in moderation they should be safe. Remember that the rabbit is very sensitive to fat, so even if he or she enjoys these seeds, you should not give him or her too much.
Sweet potatoes, just like potatoes, have a high level of starch that is definitely not recommended for rabbits. Watermelon should be considered a treat for your bunny. An occasional small piece should be fine and safe, but don’t give your rabbit to much. Fed in small amounts, it will not cause any problems to your bunny and he or she will enjoy the taste.

Rabbits should mostly have a strict diet, with treats from time to time. Wheatgrass can be safely offered to rabbits. It contains a low level of oxalic acid, some calcium, trace minerals, fiber and chlorophyll. As with all greens you should control the amount given to your bunny as too much wheatgrass can cause digestive problems for your pet. Be sure to wash it before giving to your rabbit and try to provide him or her with fresh stuff instead of dried.
Rabbits should never receive any kind of bread, even if it is white bread. They cannot digest cereals and grains and every bit of bread can choke them or form intestinal blockages. Yellow peppers have a lot of potassium, omega 6 and omega 3, vitamin C and manganese. All of these can be great for a rabbit, but not in large quantities. Rabbits are used to eating mostly grass, hay and pellets and only 15 percent of their diet should consist of vegetables. You can try to offer your pet yellow peppers in really small quantities at first to see if there is any bad reaction.
Zucchini is a good vegetable to be fed to rabbits. If the bunny has no adverse reactions 24 hours after eating zucchini, then it can be placed on the daily vegetable list. Keep in mind that rabbits need to eat from three to six different types of vegetables every day, which should be varied from day to day to be sure they receive all the needed nutrients and vitamins.
Rabbits can be loving and playful pets that can make you smile when you come from work or when you had an awful day. They should be treated like your children and you should be careful what you give them to eat because they have a sensitive digestive system. If you follow the daily diet recommendations, your rabbit will be happy and healthy.
